Stuart Marcus, MD, Ph,D.

Stuart Marcus, MD, Ph.D. is the founder, chief executive officer, and chief medical officer of SonALAsense, was first trained as a scientist and then became a physician and received training in internal medicine and medical oncology. He began working on the commercial clinical development of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with the first commercial approved photosensitizer, Photofrin (porfimer sodium) in 1988 and led the clinical team which obtained board of health approval. In 1993 he was the founding Chief Scientific Officer of DUSA Pharmaceuticals, and led the team which developed topical aminolevulinic acid (ALA) PDT for the treatment of actinic keratoses (Levulan® Kerastick ® together with DUSA BLU-U® and worked on other indications including the possibilities for ALA PDT treatment of Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM). Together with a group of researchers working with Professor Kullervo Hynynen, M.Sc., Ph.D., he optimized the use of ALA Sonodynamic therapy in the C6 rat glioma model, and, as a result of that work, founded SonALAsense, Inc. to bring that treatment to GBM patients as a noninvasive new platform for cancer treatment.
